Swanswater Fishery, Stirlingshire
There was some excellent fishing midweek when the rise in air and water temperature saw the fish becoming very active. Floating lines were catching fish, including two cracking specimens on Saturday, one at 9lb 8oz and the other 8lb 10oz, both taking the fly as it hit the water. For most of the week the fish were in the top three feet of the water and were to be found all round the main pond with the island, channel, dam, overflow and roadside being the best areas. Plenty of fish were also caught in the small ponds, with many anglers there choosing to catch and release. Most fish were taking small lures, with Cat’s Whisker, Dancer, and Fritz being the favourite patterns, but nymphs and wet flies were also successful; most popular being Damsel, Hare’s Ear, Buzzer, Kate McLaren and Black Pennel.
Ian Whitelaw, from Dunipace, caught five fish for 24lb 8oz including a 9lb 14oz rainbow, plus seven caught and released; Gordon Rowan, Glasgow, 9lb 8oz rainbow; Alan Stirling, Bonnybridge, four for 16lb 12oz including an 8lb 10oz rainbow; Barry Henderson, Sauchie, four for 16lb 5oz including a 7lb 14oz rainbow; Frank Barr, Falkirk, four for 16lb including three golds, plus two caught and released; Stuart McKay, Bonnybridge, five for 11lb 12oz; Jimmy Riddicks, Glasgow, five for 11lb including four from the Millpond; Nan Morrison, Stirling, four for 11lb 8oz including a 4lb gold; John Sneddon, Falkirk, three for 10lb 8oz including a 4lb 4oz gold; Willie Martin, Stirling, three for 10lb 8oz including a 5lb rainbow; Gregor McGregor, Falkirk, three for 9lb 4oz; Stewart Marshall, Cambusbarron, three for 8lb 8oz, plus nine caught and released; Malcolm Miller, Clackmannan, three for 8lb, plus seven caught and released; Jim Spiers two for 6lb; Stephen Murphy, Motherwell, and Ross Drummond, Kilmarnock, each caught and released seven.
