Ynys y fro Reservoirs, Gwent
The opening month of the season has seen reasonably good returns for both ponds. On the top pond, 635 fish have been caught, whilst the bottom pond had 1036 fish recorded. Some 650 anglers fished the reservoirs during March, giving a very creditable rod average of 2.6 fish. Both ponds have been restocked in preparation for the Easter break. Over the recent week some good catches have been recorded. On the top pond permit holder Keith Higgins landed seven fish using Black Buzzers from the Road Bank while day ticket holder Lee Ashcroft landed four fish. Terry O'Connor caught three rainbows. A brace of fish were caught by Colin Jones on PTNs from the Tump, plus a two-fish return from Chris Daniels, Del Haines and Dave Woods, with the latter's two fish weighing 3lb 10oz and 2lb 8oz. Brian Vaisey included a good brown trout in his top pond catch. The bottom pond has seen catch and release limits by Ken Bowring and Roger Martin, while day ticket visitor Andrew Williamson caught six trout. Richard Ingham, Sally Ann Iles and Colin Jones each had a two-fish catch. Mark Roberts added a further rainbow to his top pond catch. New member Colin Poole registered an excellent fish of 3lb 8oz. On the Association's boats, Shaun Cotterell recorded two eight-fish limits. Ken Pascoe and Keith also landed eight fish, with Ken adding a further five fish when he fished alongside Howard Davies, who recorded a three-fish return. Lee Kirkwood also landed three rainbows when he fished alongside Shaun Cotterell. Andy Hofrock used his boat session to land four fish. Black Buzzers again accounted for most boat catches with Damsel Nymphs the effective fly from the bank.
Thanks go to Ann Kean, NRFFA recording officer, for her work in arranging and supervising the Ynys y fro Troutmasters fish-off final on the top pond at the weekend which was won by Richard Bateman with a weight of 2lb 13oz. Also on the top pond, general treasurer Gwyn Davies totalled seven fish from the Road Bank and Hedge Bank using a combination of weighted and unweighted Black Buzzers. A six-fish catch was made by Roger Martin to add to his later four fish from the bottom pond. Dave Howells and Dave Woods each caught five fish, with the latter landing the season's best fish so far from either pond, with an excellent specimen rainbow of 8lb 13oz, plus a second fish of 2lb 8oz. Jeff Wilson and Adrian Connor each landed four trout with Black Buzzers again proving effective. Keith Higgins and Ken Bowring caught three rainbows with John Mcindo and Dean Connelly each catching a brace of fish. The Hedge Bank and the road bank have again provided most sport. On the bottom pond, bank catches have varied between Pear Tree bank, and the popular stretch of bank between the boat moorings and the Bush. Gareth Williams recorded a seven fish catch, with day ticket visitor Dean Walker and permit holders Ken Bowring and Roger Martin each catching four rainbows. Adrian Moyse and Chad Walker caught three fish with two fish being netted by Mark Roberts. The Association's boats were well used by Martin Rees and Stewart Morton who each landed eight fish. John Eynon caught seven trout and Richard Williams landed six fish.
