The weather has certainly been seasonal, with four seasons in a day at some stage. Strong winds and driving snow/rain made conditions extremely difficult at times but calmer conditions also occurred and some good catches have been returned. The Boathouse Pool has probably fished better than the rest with S. Japp returning a superb brownie estimated at 5lb 8oz. Bruce Thomson returned 10 fish including another superb brownie estimated at 7lb. Diawl Bachs were the order of the day for M. Robertson who also returned 10 fish including one estimated at 6lb (together with five fish from the Burnside Pool).
Chris Watson enjoyed a productive session on the Burnside landing and returning 11 fish including two excellent rainbows estimated at 9lb and 7lb. The occasional fish has been taken on the dry fly indicating that all methods are worth using throughout the year as conditions change. The Bankside Pool has had its moments with J. Lindley returning seven fish including a couple around the 4lb mark – taken mainly on small black/green lures. T. Sheringham returned six fish with the best again around 4lb. These fell mainly to Damsel patterns. The Woodside Pool has been somewhat quieter this week. The Sangsters had four fish for a total of 9lb and the Hillsdens took four for 7lb 8oz.
Swanswater Fishery, Stirlingshire
The relatively settled weather between Christmas and New Year led to excellent conditions and some great fishing. There was a great end to 2016 for regular angler Danny Doherty when he landed a cracking 10lb 13oz rainbow on the second last day of the year. A few other big fish have been seen, and some hooked and lost this week. The water is very clear with temperature around 6oC. The fish were in the top two to three feet earlier in the week but were around four feet down by the weekend. Most fish were taken on lures or nymphs, but wet flies and even the odd dry were attracting attention. Favourite patterns included Dancer, Damsel, Ace of Spades, Cat’s Whisker, PTN Buzzer and Diawl Bach. The fishery is open every day from 8am to 4.30pm.
