Bigwell Fly Fishery, Monmouth
Strange weather this week, lots of gusting winds and rain, but this didn’t upset the fish which were on excellent form, giving anglers plenty of sport. Mike Duffy caught a beautiful 6lb 8oz blue trout, Paul Ellsworthy caught his 10-fish limit on catch and release, while father and son Kevin and Will Brooks caught 9 between them on catch and release. The top pond has again provided most of the good returns, with Ken Bowring recording a 15-fish catch over three visits. Another regular, Keith Higgins, added a further 5 fish to his season's total, while Del Haines netted 4 good rainbows from his visit. Day ticket visitors Mike and Rob Porteous each landed 3 fish on their tickets, while permit holder Ivor Thomas included another grown-on brown trout estimated at 12oz, in his 3-fish total. Terry O'Connor also totalled 3 trout, while Brian Wareham and day ticket holder Bob Bradley each returned 2-fish catches. Other permit holders finding top pond fish included Phil Harper, John Mcindo, Martin Williams, Shaun Cotterell, Dave Howells, Bernard Stephens, Roger Martin and Martin Rees. On the bottom pond bank anglers Martin Williams and Martin Rees both added to their top pond catch, as did Brian Wareham. Cardiff member Dave Kane landed a brace of good rainbows when he also fished from the bank. Ken Pascoe again used the boat to good effect, recording catches of 8 and 5 fish from two sessions.
Top pond returns for the weekend show Keith Higgins netting 4 rainbows when he fished with a Diawl Bach pattern, while Ken Bowring and Martin Rees each landed 3 fish. Martin fished from the Tump Bank using a Cat’s Whisker, and the same fly produced a brace of trout for Ivor Thomas and Adrian Moyse. Other members recording top pond catches included Dean Connelly, Terry O'Connor, John Mcindo, John Eynon and Adrian Connor. Day ticket visitor Lloyd Johnson also found top pond trout. Again, Cat’s Whisker patterns plus Diawl Bach nymphs proved the more effective flies. On the bottom pond, Mark Porteous caught 2 good rainbows when he fished a Blob pattern from the Bush Bank, while Ken Pascoe enjoyed a worthwhile boat session to land 5 fish. Roy Mealing and Bryn Burgess shared a boat with both recording a catch.
