A very quiet week as far as the flyfishing was concerned with the rod average at 1.8. There has been some activity with Mike Gaskew catching a nice 3lb 4oz fish along with 4 other lovely-conditioned fish, all caught on a Green Fritz and a floating line. The top flies have been Green and Orange Fritz, Olive Tadpole, Green Montana, Cat’s Whiskers and various Boobies. The top spots have been Sailing Club Bay, the Dam, Tower Bay and Brenig Arm.
This week saw the start of the much-awaited pike week. Jack Finney and his boat partner Nick Price had a truly memorable day, catching 5 pike between them with Jack landing a 7lb trout as well. Charlie Clubb and his 7-year-old son Joe, who was fishing for pike for the first time had a great day. Joe managed to hook a whopping pike and with the help of his dad finally heaved it into the boat. The pike weighed in at 24.4lb. The biggest pike of the week so far was caught by Adam Szadkowski from Bradford landing a beautiful 26lb 8oz specimen. Along with his boat partner Tomos, caught a 24lb pike, a 19lb pike and also a 9lb 8oz rainbow. All were safely returned. Another fine pike, which tipped the scales at just under 20lb, was caught by Craig Stockton.
Fishing for pike is available throughout the winter with winter rules applying. Trout fishing is also available through the winter months with a 3-fish catch return for £11.50. There are only 5 boats available during this period so if you want a boat then please ring the Visitors Centre to book one. The main gates will be shutting at 4pm this week and all boats need to be back on the jetty by 3.15pm.

Boat users on the bottom pond have found fish during the week, with Shaun Cotterill and Keith Higgins each netting 3 fish when they shared a boat. Ken Pascoe and Howard Davies also fished together, with Ken landing his 3 trout using a Drowned Daddy and Howard Davies also netting a good fish. A second boat session realised a further 3 trout for Ken who then followed up his boat return with a good rainbow from the bank. Stewart Gordon also used his boat ticket for some excellent fish. Adrian Moyse landed a second rainbow to add to a catch on the top pond. Also fishing the top pond during the week were Ken Bowring with 8 fish from 3 visits, Ivor Thomas from Cardiff recording a 3-fish return, again over two visits, whilst one session from the Railings Bank resulted in 3 trout for Chris Daniels. Membership secretary Phil Harper returned from his holiday to net 3 trout using a Damsel pattern. Dave Howells added a further 2 trout to his season's catch returns, with day ticket holder A. Brown netting a brace of fish. Cat’s Whisker patterns again accounted for most fish caught. October's returns indicated that some 400 visits had been made to Ynys y fro, resulting in some 330 fish being caught on the top pond plus a further 215 trout from the bottom pond. These figures produced a very creditable average catch return of 1.4 fish per visit. A special reference can be made to Ynys y fro's representative at the Troutmasters final for 2017, fished on Draycote water. Richard Bateman achieved 38th place in a field of 88 competitors. Troutmasters badges awarded for October included fisheries treasurer Colin Jones for his 3lb 9oz rainbow while 2 awards were made to Terry O'Connor for fish weighing in at 3lb 8oz.
At the weekend Keith Higgins landed a good rainbow from the bank of the bottom pond, and Ken Pascoe continued his good record from a boat with 6 fish caught, mainly on a Caenis Nymph, but the majority of the weekend catches were made on the top pond. The area around the inlet proved the most beneficial, with recently stocked fish moving in shoals alongside nearby banks. Ken Bowring fished a Cat’s Whisker to take 2 trout. Cardiff permit holders Alan Rees and Ivor Thomas each netted 2 fish with Gwyn Davies, Gareth Neale, Martin Williams all finding fish. Kasidit Leoviriyakit was also successful from the same area of the pond. A reminder for all members that the Association's AGM is scheduled for Thursday November 23 at Risca RFC commencing at 7.30pm.
