Ynys y Fro Reservoirs, Gwent
Both ponds have received a further stocking with some extra brown trout for the top pond which saw some good returns despite the cold easterly winds at the end of the week. Fisheries treasurer Colin Jones recorded a limit from the Hedge/Horses Bank with a further four fish from the same area to mainly Buzzers and Diawl Bachs. Dean Connelly and day ticket visitor Greg Cannon each landed five fish while Alan Rees, Ken Bowring, day ticket holder Dean Taylor, Keith Higgins and Gwyn Davies all landed four rainbows. While most of the fish were again caught on Buzzer patterns Gwyn used a Baby Sunfly in addition to Black Buzzers to take his fish. Head bailiff John Mcindo and permit holder Del Haines each recorded a three fish catch, with Cardiff member Jeff Wilson, Andy Hofrock, and day ticket holders Peter Dent and Bob Cook each landing a brace of trout. The best fished recorded from the top pond was a 3lb 4oz rainbow landed by Del Haines. On the bottom pond most catches from the bank came from the area between the boat moorings and the Bush with some fish also being caught in and around Farmhouse Bay. Catch and release limits were taken by Ken Bowring, Roger Martin and Steve Doherty, while Dave Howells finished with a seven trout catch. Ken Pascoe and Keith Higgins each landed five fish, while Colin Jones added a further four fish to his top pond catch. Sally Ann Iles marked her first visit of the season with four fish caught from the Bush using Buzzers and small Cat’s Whiskers. A number of fishermen, including Dean Taylor, Bob Cook and Adrian Connor landed two fish. Day ticket visitor Mike Davies landed a fish in excess of 2lb when he fished the bottom pond. Regular boat fishermen Craig Bowles and Dave Smith caught a limit and four fish respectively with a good fish around 3lb amongst Craig's limit.
Continuing cold easterly winds and bright sunshine provided challenging fishing conditions over the weekend. Nevertheless, some good returns were made. On the top pond, day ticket holder Colin Poole included an excellent fish of 3lb 7oz in his limit return, while Dean Morgan landed six rainbows on his day ticket. A brace of trout were caught by Adrian Moyse and Mark Roberts. The bottom pond again produced a number of limits, with Ken Bowring, Kevin Pinkney, Dave Howells, Roger Martin and Colin Jones all successful. Mark Roberts added another seven fish to his top pond catch while four-fish returns were recorded by Adrian Moyse and Martin Williams. Long serving committee man Brian Wareham caught three fish off the Bush, while Mike Brake, Richard Bateman, John Mcindo and Martin Rees all caught two trout. A two-fish catch also went to Ken Pascoe via a morning boat session. Most fish were again caught on Goldhead Black Buzzers and Diawl Bachs, although a Damsel Nymph fished on an intermediate line found fish for Ken Bowring and Kevin Pinkney.
