Ynys y fro Reservoirs, Gwent
The increased stocking for the top pond has seen much improved catch returns, mainly from the Railings Bank. A previous Troutmasters' finalist Dave Arlotte landed four rainbows, followed by Del Haines, Ivor Thomas and Brian Wareham with two fish each. Brian added a further fish from a later session, while Colin Jones had two fish from two visits. Roy Jones, Brian James, Phil Harper, Terry O'Connor, Norman Curtis and Bernard Hartland all fished the Railings Bank to record a catch. The majority of fish landed were caught on goldhead nymphs and particularly a Goldhead Diawl Bach, although Corixa patterns also proved effective. Around the banks of the bottom pond, Terry O'Connor caught a brace of fish on each of two visits, using a CdC emerger. A two-fish catch was also recorded by Brian Langley, Mike Hyde and Phil Harper, while David Reid Smith, Roger Martin, Colin Jones and Bryn Burgess all found fish. Boat fisherman Ken Pascoe recorded a four-fish return from two outings. Boat partner Howard Davies also netted a good trout. Ken Bowring also recorded a four-fish catch, with Brian James netting three rainbows to add to his earlier top pond return.
Both ponds were badly affected by strong winds on Saturday with a consequent reduction in good catch returns. Nevertheless, Adrian Moyse and Roy Jones fished the sheltered banks of the top pond, landing three and two fish respectively with a Damsel Nymph the more effective fly. Regular top pond fisherman Gwyn Davies also found conditions hard when he fished on Sunday, but was able to land a good fish from the Hedge Bank on a Corixa pattern. On the bottom pond the wind again made boat fishing difficult, but did not prevent Ken Pascoe and John Eynon recording three and two fish catches, with the latter using a Bloodworm pattern. Ken Bowring, who had fished on the Friday, landed three trout using a Black Emerger. Around the banks, Pear Tree bank provided the best fishing, with Wynne Jones and day ticket visitor Ross Drummond finding fish.
