Ynys y fro Reservoirs, Gwent
Reasonably good returns from both ponds during the week, thanks mainly to lower water temperatures. On the top pond Graham Ingram Evans included a 3lb rainbow in his total catch of 6 fish, while Roger Martin landed 5 trout using a Goldhead Damsel. Gwyn Davies netted 2 fish from the Hedge Bank and a second brace from Swan Bay, including a fish in excess of 3lb caught on a size 16 Baby Sun Fly pattern. Dave Howells recorded a 3-fish catch, as did Adrian Moyse, while Chris Daniels and Colin Jones each caught and released a brace of trout, with Colin adding a further two fish from another evening session. Martin Rees caught an excellent 3lb 8oz rainbow from the Railings Bank, with Brian Green, Alan Rees, Dean Connelly, Phil Harper and Dave Slocombe also finding fish along the same bank. Goldhead Damsels and Diawl Bach nymphs accounted for most catches. On the bottom pond Martin Williams caught four fish from the bank using Daddy patterns, with Gareth Neale and Steve Curtis each recording 2-fish returns. Dr John Morgan landed a fish of 2lb 9oz when he fished the bank. On the Association boats Ken Bowring caught 7 and 5 fish over two visits, mainly on Buzzers, while Ken Pascoe continued his good boat outings with a further 5 rainbows plus a 3- fish catch using a sunken Daddy pattern. Roy Mealing caught 4 trout when he boat-fished. Howard Davies, Lyndsey Kirkwood, Shaun Cotterell, and Bryn Burgess all found fish.
Fishing returns for August indicate that 175 fish were caught on the top pond with 225 landed by bank and boat fishermen from the bottom pond. With 480 visits being recorded the monthly rod average was slightly below one fish per angler. Both ponds have been restocked with a good quota of rainbow trout.
The early part of the weekend resulted in most catches being made on the top pond. Dave Slocombe landed 3 fish, with Del Haines, Colin Jones, Keith Higgins, Steve Curtis and day ticket visitor Gethin Bowes each catching a brace of trout. Also registering returns were Phil Harper, Steven Snape, Richie Young, Ivor Thomas, Adrian Connor and Andrew Edward. Most successful flies were again various Damsel patterns plus Buzzers. Best bottom pond results again fell to Ken Bowring, who boat-fished to land 4 fish, followed by John Eynon with a 3-fish return. Around the banks of the bottom pond Steve Curtis caught a "second cast" rainbow from Pipe Bay, while Mike Brake fished the same area of the pond to also land a good fish.
