Swanswater Fishery, Stirlingshire
The end of the old year and the start of the new saw some excellent fishing and some days when the conditions made things more than a little difficult. The week saw a wide range of weather, including snow, ice, rain, gale force winds, and a few calm, dry days. The water temperature rose from 2oC to 4oC over the period, although it then dropped back down to 2oC as we enter the second week of the year. Most anglers visiting the Fishery had some level of success with top rod so far this year being one of our longest standing regulars, Danny Doherty, who netted 20 on his first visit of the year. Plenty of cracking golds and blues feature in the returns along with the usual top-quality rainbows. Although no big fish were recorded a few were hooked and lost and several 4lb to 5lb rainbows were returned in addition to those taken. Most of the fish were caught around 3 to 5 feet down and although the channel at the front of the island was often the hotspot, fish were being hooked all round Swanswater including round the back of the islands and from the roadside. The Meadow Pond continued to provide good sport for those choosing to try there. Small lures such as Dancer, Cat’s Whisker and Humungus, along with nymphs including Diawl Bach, Damsel, Bloodworm and Cormorant, were the most popular patterns.
The aerators are on in Swanswater and the Meadow Pond and the Fishery will remain open during the current cold snap.
