Swanswater Fishery, Stirlingshire
A warm, dry, sunny week saw the water temperature rise from 12oC to 14oC and the fish become much more active. On the days when there was some cloud cover they were to be found in the top 3 feet of the water, but in the bright sunshine they were much deeper – around 5-6 feet down. In the mornings they were to be found along the bank from the dam to the boats where there was a bit of shade from the sun. In the afternoons and evenings they were more spread out with the island an occasional hotspot. Deep down they were taking mostly lures, including Dancer, Ally McCoist, Cat’s Whisker and Olive lure. When they were nearer the surface the best patterns included nymphs and wets including Hare’s Ear, PTN, Diawl Bach, Bibio, Kate McLaren and Mallard & Claret. As the water warmed anglers reported a lot of tail-nipping and chasing so a reasonably fast retrieve was required to hook up with fish. Some dry flies were also working with Hawthorns and Black Gnat both being successful in attracting fish. Browns and tigers are still figuring in the catch returns with many lovely overwintered browns being caught. The Fishery is now open every day from 8am to 9.30pm.
